Case Studies > Civic Amenity Site - Cheltenham Borough Council
Cheltenham Borough Council is a mainly urban authority and covers an area of approximately 18 square miles. Within the borough there are some 54,915 domestic properties.
Residents of the borough are able to visit the site in order to dispose of household waste, bulky waste and a wide range of items for recycling. Cheltenham Borough Council is unique in that, it is the only collection authority to own a site of this nature.
Ubico took on the management of the Swindon Road Civic Amenity site in April 2012 and has continued to run the site in the same format as the council.
We currently employ a team of five full time staff who work shifts to manage the site from 07:30 to 19:30 (18:30 winter time) Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 16:00 on a Saturday and 09:00 to 13:00 on a Sunday or Bank Holiday.
The site is incredibly busy, currently receiving in excess of 30 tonnes of waste and recycling each week. When Ubico took over the management of the site in 2012, we reported an overall site recycling rate of 66.2% for the 2012/13 financial year. We are pleased to report that for 2013/14 we achieved a 70.1% recycling rate and already, the first quarter of 2014/15 is looking promising with an average recycling rate of 73.3%.
All staff members are fully trained and competent in manual handling and compactor operation and work in accordance to industry approved risk assessments and safe systems of working. To ensure the safety of not only our employees, but also members of the public, our supervisors carry out regular, un-announced quality checks to ensure that our teams are working safely at all times.
