Case Studies > Street Cleaning - Cotswold District Council
Cotswold District Council covers an area of approximately 450 square miles, most of which falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The street cleaning team is a small, but very capable team, made up of 13 full time staff members, two seasonal staff members and one supervisor.
Ubico took on the street cleaning for Cotswold District Council in August 2012 and has continued to maintain a high standard of street cleanliness in line with the Council's requirements. The team are currently responsible for:
- Road & pavement sweeping
- Litter picking
- Emptying litter & dog waste bins
- Removal of dead animals
- Fly tip clearance
- Sharps removal
- Graffiti removal
- Sand bagging/emergency flood works
- Winter maintenance (gritting and snow clearance)
The majority of the working day is spent carrying out cleaning works in line with the council's street cleaning schedule. The frequency of these visits depend on the allocated 'zone' that an area falls within, meaning some areas are serviced on a daily basis, others on a weekly, monthly or twice yearly basis.
Ad hoc cleaning works are carried out on an as and when basis dependant on urgency and we operate an emergency 'out of hours' call out service to ensure public safety at all times.
All team members are appropriately trained and work in accordance to industry approved risk assessments and safe systems of working. To ensure the safety of not only our employees, but also members of the public, our supervisors carry out regular, un-announced quality checks to ensure that our teams are working safely and returning waste receptacles neatly as we expect them to at all times.
The team is versatile enough that we have been able to take on private work, such as car park sweeping and street cleaning for private events in order to generate a small income. This in turn enables us to offset some of the cost to the council, reducing the annual street cleaning budget. In addition to this, we are always looking at ways of improving the service that we provide, whilst saving our client money. More recently, we have been trialling joint working initiatives and carbon efficient vehicle technologies.
