We are extremely proud of our staff and want to promote an environment where our staff feel like part of the family, feel valued, safe and listened to and in return, want to play their part in making our company a success. Alisha Wala, Finance and Contracts Assistant and Fleet Administrator joined us in 2020, and below she tells us all about her role at Ubico, and what she enjoys about being part of the Ubico family.

Tell us about your role at Ubico and what a typical day looks like for you

I started my career with Ubico as a temporary fleet administrator. I received a phone call out of the blue, from an agency that asked if I would be interested in a cleaning opportunity at a secondary school. Due to location, I had to decline but then they told me about the role at Ubico. From there I secured an amazing role within a welcoming team that has provided me with lots of support since day one. Shortly after joining, a new part time Finance and Contracts Assistant role was advertised which I applied for and was offered. I was able to maintain my Fleet Administrator role as well and am now lucky enough to be a proud member of two great teams.

My job roles are really varied. Within my fleet role I am involved in administrative tasks associated with vehicle maintenance and repair and I have also learnt how to use our new fleet management system. In my finance role, I code transactions, generate invoices and am in charge of credit card reconciliations. I am really pleased to be in the position I am in, as it has allowed me to learn about the company and its values on so many levels.

What is your favourite thing about working at Ubico?

My favourite thing about working at Ubico has to be the friendliness of the all the employees. From the first time I walked through the gates, every single person greeted me with a friendly smile. I probably stood out a bit, dressed in a white blouse and skirt, I think I missed the memo of the high-vis dress code! But I quickly got adjusted with a bright orange jacket (which is still quite big on me...) and stylish hard-capped shoes - I am surprised they make them so small! During my first week working at Ubico it was great to see what people do and to see the 'behind-the-scenes' action that surrounds our local services. From the Operations team and our Operatives to the Fleet mechanics and corporate support staff, everyone plays such a crucial part in the company.

What has it been like starting a new job during the pandemic?

I had recently graduated from University, well in 2019 which seems like a long time ago (at least in lockdown months!) I had just started a temporary role and been in the position for one week, when the building had to suddenly closed due to a National lockdown (1.0). At the time we were told when things get back to normal the work would start again, sadly this was not the case. It was very difficult looking for work during the global pandemic, many workers were on furlough so companies were not recruiting. I am really grateful that the opportunity at Ubico came along, for the experiences it has offered me, and the fantastic teams I am lucky enough to be part of.

What do you usually do in your free time?

I love to travel and explore different cultures. In the last year I have taken fondly to yoga and have really enjoyed learning the flows, building my strength and feeling more zen! I enjoy volunteering, so when lockdown started I signed up to be a NHS Responder: Check in and Chat volunteer, and for those of you that know me, know that I am very chatty and can easily spark up a conversation with a stranger! I have also been a Trustee on the Board for a local charity, Inclusion Gloucestershire, for 5 years and have recently been elected as Chair of the Board. In this role I will be leading on the development of the Board, chairing meetings and providing direct support to the charity's CEO. In my free time I also enjoy watching television, and am a very loyal fan of both Home and Away and Neighbours!
